STEM education is an interdisciplinary approach that combines science, technology, engineering and mathematics to equip young learners with the knowledge and skills to navigate these fields through hands-on learning experiences.

STEM education can play a crucial role in exploring interest and shaping the future career of your child by equipping them with necessary knowledge and skills required in numerous sectors such as health, aviation etc. However, most middle school curriculums only equip students with in-depth knowledge in science and math, often overlooking engineering and technology. STEM activities bridges the learning gap with opportunity to explore these fields in depth along with real world applications.

But before we move on to different STEM activities, let’s look at why it is important to learn STEM for middle schoolers and how can your child effectively learn them

Benefits of Learning STEM

Enhancing Critical Thinking Skills and Problem Solving

Engaging in STEM activities can propel your child to go beyond rote memorization to analyze information critically. Examples of STEM activities such as solving complex equations, troubleshooting coding challenges encourages the development of problem solving skills that can be adapted to real life situations including college, future workplaces & beyond.

Fostering Creativity and Innovation

The heart of STEM is innovation. STEM activities often present real-world problems and your child will be challenged to find solutions to these problems. Such activities can stimulate creativity and encourage innovative thinking in your child.

Soft Skills Development

STEM activities may also encourage the growth of soft skills such as communication and teamwork. Many STEM activities are collaborative in nature, requiring kids to work in teams. This also enables young learners struggling with interpersonal skills to develop social skills while they work on collaborative projects of interest to them.

How are STEM Activities Relevant For Middle Schoolers?

Introducing STEM activities in the developmental stage can help in the process of cognitive development. Engaging in STEM activities in middle school can have a profound impact on developing critical areas of intellect such as problem-solving, analytical thinking, reading skills, and learning abilities.

Middle School is also a core period in your child’s academic journey when they begin to learn subjects in depth. School curriculum could restrict the learning to textbook and overlook fields of education like technology and engineering. STEM activities and programs can open up opportunities for kids to discover their passions and develop love of learning.

Most STEM activities for middle schoolers are modeled in a way that requires your child to explore ideas, discuss and solve problems on their own. This approach nurtures curiosity, interest and more importantly teaches them to learn on their own.

STEM Activities to Set Your Child on the Exploration Journey

Start with at Home Experiments

Home activities can be a great place to assess and even kick start your child’s interest in the STEM field. You can perform some of these home experiments with your child or equip them with all the tools and instruction to execute the activities

Toothpick bridge: As the name suggests, this activity will require you and your child to build bridges from toothpicks and use adhesives to stick everything together. Explain and demonstrate how design and construction principles work, enabling structures made of lightweight objects capable of holding up heavy objects. You can make it challenging by placing heavier objects until the structure breaks.

Egg Landing: Challenge your kids to drop an egg from the height without breaking it. They can use any number of supplies to achieve the end goal. Allow them to put their creativity and problem solving skills as there is more than one way to do this. Egg landing activity allows your child to comprehend the principles of physics and engineering as they explore their the course of action

Bottle rocket: The concept is to build up pressure in the bottle filled with water by mixing vinegar and baking soda, in order  to launch the bottle rocket. Pique curiosity in your child for rocket science or chemistry with this simple activity. Find a open ground and take safety precautions while performing this experiment

If you have already assessed your child’s interest, you could move on to advanced lessons and projects that are discussed below

School Clubs

School science clubs and robotics clubs are great places to diversify knowledge in STEM subjects. If you find your child to be curious about technology or science related topics, encourage them to join any of the school clubs on the specific subject to explore more of this interest. School clubs provide hands-on, interactive activities that allow students to engage directly with STEM concepts helping them to broaden their knowledge beyond textbooks

Online Coding Tools

To introduce coding to middle schoolers, it's important to break it down simply and show them the creative side. Child friendly programming languages can build foundational coding skills in your child in an engaging way. You can begin the coding journey through beginner programming tools that are modeled on drag and drop functionality.  Swift PlayGround, Blockly, Scratch requires no prior coding knowledge and are perfect for kids who are starting out.

Explore Online Courses

Many online platforms offer STEM courses specifically catering to middle school learners. These programs are meant to provide advanced and comprehensive knowledge to the young learners. Choose a program that resonates well with the interest of your child to fast track their learning in STEM fields

Selecting STEM activities for Middle Schoolers

Selecting STEM activities requires a nuanced approach. Consider individual interests and learning styles, ensuring that each activity becomes a personalized journey. This customization fosters a deeper connection, transforming STEM from a mere educational pursuit to a passion.

Consider the following steps to make an informed decision:

Offer a Variety of Activities: Provide a diverse range of STEM activities  that cater to your child’s multiple interests and preferences. Some learners enjoy hands-on experiments, while others may prefer computer-based. Assess your child’s inclination through open discussion and close observation.

Encourage Personal Projects: Encourage individuals to pursue personal projects. This could involve creating a science fair project, building a model, or designing a solution to a real-world problem.

Connect with Experts in the field: Speaking to academic experts who have pursued education in the STEM field not only can be insightful but also inspirational for your child.

Crimson Rise can connect you with experts who can guide your child on the path to succeed in STEM. Your child could also work one-on-one with a mentor in our comprehensive programs to complete individual projects like coding websites, building prototypes, etc. on their own.

Create a Supportive Environment: Offer flexibility to your kids in their STEM choices. Giving your child the opportunity to pursue what interests them can create excitement and motivation to learn.

STEM education for middle schoolers opens up a journey of exploration and growth. Continued encouragement of exploration, curiosity and providing appropriate resources can put your child on a path toward academic and career success.
