Begin Planning Your Career Path in Law & Public Service

The law and public service fields are inherently dynamic. Career exploration can help your child better understand all of those possibilities earlier, providing plenty of time to refine their options and begin to develop the ideal skills.

“Expert Advice”

Looking at news and events today, it’s clear that the challenges facing governments have never been greater. From climate change to geopolitical threats to mass migration, today’s pressing policy issues demand effective leadership and strategy. That’s why now is an exciting time to pursue a career in public service and law!

Many governments today face significant gaps in skills and capacity. Aspirational public service-oriented students have the opportunity to fill these gaps by pursuing impactful purpose-driven careers after graduation.

While salaries will rarely match private sector jobs, public service careers allow for plenty of exciting, unique opportunities. For example, careers in the diplomatic service allow for substantial international travel and experiences; and legal careers can allow students to empower everyday lives and achieve justice.

What’s more, young people today are likely to have time for 2 if not 3 careers! There’s nothing to stop them from beginning a career in public service, then choosing to pivot into the private sector at a later stage. The skills gained in public service, such as project leadership, design thinking and economic analysis, will serve your kids well if they later decide to transition to the private sector.

Hot tip: Work experience may be comparatively easy to gain in public service, for example local government departments are often keen to support young students in their development. Serving in a local capacity, even on a part-time/summer holiday basis, could be a great way to test-drive your child’s interests and aptitude for public service work. Some of the most successful national public servants began their careers in local government!

Plan Your Steps Ahead..

Begin Planning Your Career Path in Arts & Design

These disciplines offer boundless opportunities to harness their imaginative abilities and create work that captivates and inspires.

“Expert Advice”

Young students interested in pursuing fine arts should aim to build a diverse portfolio that showcases their range and technical skills, while focusing on one or two themes that are dear to their heart. For those leaning towards graphic design, learning software like Adobe Creative Suite and staying updated with design trends is crucial, but not the only focus: engaging with crafts and treating projects as creative experiments can make your portfolio stand out. Everyone can learn to use softwares, but a great design school will appreciate portfolios with distinctive character! Similarly, aspiring architects should not only gain proficiency in CAD software and begin understanding sustainable design practices but also develop strong hand-sketching skills, as these teach valuable observational techniques and complement digital proficiencies.

Hot tip: To develop good habits for a strong portfolio, prioritize drawing, painting, and sketching from life rather than relying on copying images found on the internet. Observing real-life subjects enhances your understanding of forms, lighting, and textures, leading to more authentic and skillful artwork. Always carry a sketchbook with you to record all aspects of your creative process, from things you see to research on colors, forms, and experimental ideas. This practice not only improves your skills but also documents your artistic journey, providing valuable material for future projects and portfolio development.

Begin Planning Your Career Path in Health Sciences

The health sciences field is continuously evolving, driven by new technologies, emerging diseases, and shifting patient needs. With the right preparation and mentorship, your student can embark on a fulfilling career journey that combines their intellectual curiosity and compassionate spirit.

“Expert Advice”

There are numerous career opportunities in the health sciences that can lead to both rewarding and impactful work. A key for one’s success in this career path is to truly love what you do. Those who work in the health sciences such as doctors, nurses, etc. often work long and unforgiving hours, but when you are truly passionate about your work, these hours are not a burden, but rather, a joy. To foster a passion for this field, completing science coursework in biology and chemistry related topics is essential. Education for health science professionals is centered around the sciences, and having a passion for these topics is critical for completing your training. Additionally, gaining early exposure, through shadowing, to all the different career opportunities in healthcare is a must. The journey to a healthcare related profession is long and filled with many obstacles, ensuring that you will love your profession once you reach the finish line of training is important, or else you may burn out, or lose motivation to continue.

Hot tip: After establishing that a career in healthcare is right for you, be sure to engage in experiences that you are truly passionate about, not what you think an admissions committee will be the most impressed by. Ultimately, your application is your story and should be centered around a strong application narrative, not just completing experiences to “check the boxes.”
